Building Permit Requirements - Signage

  • Provide a site plan that shows locations of the proposed signage.
  • Indicate signage dimensions and if the signage is interior or exterior.
  • For exterior signage, provide building elevations.
  • Indicate that all work will shall comply to the following:
    • 2022 California Building Code
    • 2022 California Existing Building Code
    • 2022 California Electrical Code
    • 2022 California Energy Code
    • Culver City Municipal Code
  • For illuminated signage:
    • If new wiring and controls are required, add note: "ELECTRICAL PERMIT REQUIRED FOR ELECTRICAL WORK".
    • Add note:  "ALL ELECTRICAL SIGNS TO HAVE UL STICKERS, INDICATING THAT THEY ARE LISTED AND CERTIFIED (CEC 600.3)”.
    • Show the location of the power source and the location of the disconnects.
    • Indicate manufacturer's name and UL E-number.
    • Provide Title 24 forms (2022-NRCC-LTS-E: Lighting – Sign)
    • Show positive attachment to supporting structure and specify type of existing construction.
    • Provide engineered design for any signage that weighs more than 20 lbs., new monument signs, and new billboard-type signage. The drawings and calculations    shall be stamped by a CA-licensed Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, or Architect.
    • When engineered design is required, the supporting structure and the sign anchorage shall be designed for the governing lateral wind/seismic loads.
