In addition to collecting unwanted mattresses and box spring foundations, it sorts and loads these items onto trailers by Culver City staff at the Transfer Station. Lithium Battery Safe Disposal

Protect Culver City: Keep Lithium Batteries Out of the Trash

We all rely on the devices that power our everyday lives, from smartphones and laptops to e-bikes and cordless tools. But when those lithium-ion batteries reach the end of their life, it might seem natural to just toss them into your household trash or recycling bin.

Here is why those batteries need a different kind of care.
When lithium-ion batteries are thrown into regular bins, they get compressed and crushed inside our sanitation trucks and waste facilities.

This damage can easily cause them to spark and ignite dangerous, fast-moving fires.

Improperly discarded batteries put our hardworking sanitation crews, our local neighborhoods, and vital city equipment in harm's way. Additionally, if they end up in landfills, the toxic chemicals inside can leak out, polluting the soil and groundwater we all share.

How You Can Help Protect Our City

The good news is that keeping Culver City safe is easy! By taking a few extra minutes to properly drop off your old lithium batteries, you are directly protecting city staff, your neighbors, and the local environment.

Here is where you can safely and easily drop off your batteries in and around our area:

  • LA County "Too Toxic to Trash" Event (Free!): LA County hosts these safe disposal events semi-annually right here in Culver City every June and December. Find out when the next disposal event will be in Culver City.
  • Julian Dixon Branch Library: A convenient, year-round drop-off spot right in our community, located at 4975 Overland Ave, Culver City, CA 90230.
  • Hyperion S.A.F.E. Center: A dedicated collection center for electronic and toxic waste just a short drive away at 7660 West Imperial Highway, Gate B, Playa Del Rey, CA 90293. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Thank you for taking the extra step to dispose of your batteries safely. Together, we can keep Culver City clean, safe, and fire-free!
