The Micheaux Film Festival
October 23rd-26th
The Culver Theatre, Downtown Culver City
The Micheaux Film Festival will return to The Culver Theater this month, with a selection of short and feature projects, including 36 world premieres.
The festival, launched by Courtney L. Branch and Noel Braham to honor the legendary Oscar Micheaux, celebrates its seventh anniversary this year. The festival hit a submissions record, with nearly half of participating directors identifying as first-time or early-career filmmakers. More than 60 percent of projects feature work from majority women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ crews. Eight percent of directors self-identified as having a disability, and submissions reflected a broad ethnic spectrum, including African American and Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, Middle Eastern, West Indian and Caribbean, and multiracial creators.
Noel Braham, Co-Founder of the Micheaux Film Festival, said the festival’s opening and closing projects were chosen to “remind us that stories carry memory, identity, and resilience.”
“Our focus is on voices that challenge us, heal us, and help us see the world differently. Culver City has a deep connection to The Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland, and bringing It’s Dorothy to the community here is a reminder of how we carry legacies forward and find meaning in them today,” he said. “Remember and She Dances both echo that truth, showing us that whether through friendship or family, the struggles we face can become pathways to growth, healing, and discovering a deeper sense of who we are as individuals and as part of communities.”
