At the eighth annual awards event held on September 10, 2026, Mayor Freddy Puza presented awards to 12 newly certified and recertified sustainable businesses as part of the City of Culver City’s Sustainable Business Certification Program.

“We are incredibly proud of our City’s flagship Program and of all of the businesses that have chosen to be sustainability stewards in our community,” said Mayor Puza. “Since its inception in 2017, we have certified 112 businesses. This Program provides business assistance aimed at conserving natural resources, reducing waste, and preventing pollution, which improves the wellbeing of our community and is a key component of our climate action goals.”

Businesses may choose from two certification tiers: “Certified” or “Certified Innovator.” Certified businesses meet core resource efficiency and community engagement criteria, while Certified Innovator businesses implement additional innovative practices to offset greenhouse gas emissions, participate in their communities and adopt socially responsible practices.

Culver City is one of more than 40 local governments in California that currently offer a Green Business Program to their business communities.

About Culver City’s Sustainable Business Certification Program

Developed under guidelines established by the California Green Business Network (CAGBN), the program guides participating businesses through a comprehensive on-site sustainability assessment of their buildings and operations. Assessments include a review of energy and water use, waste management, sustainable procurement, pollution prevention practices, transportation habits and community engagement.

Upon completion of the assessment, sustainability consultants create customized action plans identifying measures businesses can implement to increase energy and water efficiency, establish green purchasing guidelines and create a better working environment for staff. Businesses receive step-by-step guidance throughout the process to help ensure they have the resources needed to meet certification criteria.

This year, several certified businesses received free water-saving retrofits and new high-efficiency water fixtures at no charge through the program’s partnership with Golden State Water.

In 2017, Sustainable Works and Balanced Approach developed a customized program on behalf of the City that adheres to California Green Business Network guidelines. The program assists participating businesses with resources for reducing energy and water use, preventing pollution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diverting waste from landfills. Adopting sustainable policies and promoting cleaner modes of transportation are also key components of the program.

Certified businesses can showcase their commitment to sustainable operations by displaying the Certification Program logo and using a certification seal in promotional materials and on their websites. Businesses also receive City Council commendations, are included in the statewide CAGBN directory and are listed on the Shop Green smartphone app, which features certified green businesses throughout California.

Businesses can register or learn more about participating in Culver City’s Sustainable Business Certification Program on the City’s website.
