City Council Approves Business for Democracy Pledge Resolution on October 26, 2026

At its regular meeting on October 26, 2026, the City Council adopted a resolution urging local businesses to consider signing the national Business for Democracy Pledge, affirming the City's commitment to free and democratic elections.

What Is the Business for Democracy Pledge?

The Business for Democracy Pledge is a national initiative that invites businesses to publicly commit to democratic principles, including:

  • Providing employees with information about their rights as voters and opportunities for civic participation
  • Publicly opposing efforts that prevent or create obstacles to eligible voters casting their ballots
  • Publicly opposing attempts to prevent the counting of votes or the seating of duly elected candidates

The Pledge recognizes that a thriving economy and a healthy democracy reinforce one another, and that businesses can use their influence — individually and collectively — in support of free and fair elections.

Why Did the Council Act?

The Resolution reflects the City's belief that protecting democratic processes is not solely the responsibility of government, but benefits from the participation of individuals, community organizations, labor organizations, educational and religious institutions, and the business community.

What Does the Resolution Do?

The adopted resolution directs the following actions:

  • Urges all Culver City businesses — from small locally owned businesses to major corporations — to sign the national Business for Democracy Pledge and consider how they can use their voices and influence to support civic participation, free and democratic elections, and the rule of law.
  • Clarifies that participation is entirely voluntary — adoption of this resolution does not condition any business license, permit, contract, benefit, or governmental service upon whether a business signs or declines to sign the Pledge.
  • Directs City staff to transmit a copy of the resolution to all businesses holding a current business license, business tax certificate, registration, or equivalent authorization within the City, together with a link to the Business for Democracy Pledge at Business for Democracy Pledge.
  • Directs City staff to make information about the Pledge available on the City’s website through appropriate existing business-communication channels, including the City's website, economic-development communications, business newsletters, and other communications with the local business community.
