Waste Hauling Permits & Requirements

Commercial Hauler

Culver City provides waste management services for the community and offers permitting options for the businesses that qualify to self-haul, back-haul or use a third-party hauler for their waste. Culver City maintains an exclusive waste collection service for the community. However, businesses that choose to manage the transportation and disposal of their materials, outside of the City’s regular collection services are required to obtain the appropriate City permit, and comply with all applicable waste management, recordkeeping, and reporting requirements, as outlined in Culver City Municipal Code 5.01.015. This permitting process ensures that all waste - including solid waste, recyclables, and organics - is tracked and transported to licensed facilities in compliance with state law, including Senate Bill (SB) 1383.

Whether your business operates as a Self-Hauler (using internal employees), a Back-hauler (transporting to a corporate facility), or utilizes a Third-Party Hauler (a private collection company), you would be responsible for accurate recordkeeping, annual reporting, and ensuring your waste is properly sorted. By managing your own waste hauling, you accept the responsibility for meeting these environmental standards and city reporting requirements.

Types of Permits

  • Self-Hauler: A business that uses its own employees and equipment to transport its waste.
  • Back-Hauler: A business that transports its waste back to a central corporate facility for consolidation.
  • Third-Party Hauler: A private company hired to collect and transport materials.
Note: These haulers cannot charge businesses a fee for collecting recyclable or organic waste.
